The third canvas in Sally’s well received Madeline Collection, “In an Old House in Paris” is adapted from an image in the book Madeline and the Old House in Paris, written and illustrated by John Bemelmans Marciano, the grandson of the series originator Ludwig Bemelmans. This renowned children’s book was published by Viking Books for Young Readers; First Edition edition (October 8, 2013).
The image in this new hand stitch painted canvas recalls the essence of the book Madeline written and illustrated (1939) by Ludwig Bemelmans. In that book, the first in the beloved Madeline series, he so eloquently wrote:
“In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines
Lived twelve little girls in two straight lines
In two straight lines they broke their bread
And brushed their teeth and went to bed.
They left the house at half past nine
In two straight lines in rain or shine-
The smallest one was Madeline.”
