Description
The West African Men’s Weave design was originally published charted in Sally Corey’s acclaimed book Weaving Designs for Needlepoint, an international collection, by William Morrow & Co., Inc. in 1981.
Offered here, hand stitch-painted, it’s called Ghana. (If you prefer to work from its chart, see #10016.)
The design was inspired by an incredibly beautiful cloth woven by the men of Ghana. Sally saw the original textile in an exhibition of African Textiles and Decorative Arts held years ago at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The original textile closely resembles kente cloth, but the brilliance of the colors and the asymmetry of the stripes are quite unusual.
Ghana’s design provides the opportunity to work different fancy stitches, as the knitting, or kalem, stitch shown in the finished cushion. Or, of course, it can be easily and comfortably worked in tent/continental stitch.
